Beyond the sweeping dunes of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert lies a fragile ecosystem rarely understood. During the Wiki Commons of the Wild Expedition - India 2026, we documented the elusive Indian Desert Jird (Meriones hurrianae), a keystone desert species vital to grassland balance. Through patient field observation, we recorded feeding behavior, colony structure, and rare breeding activity - creating an open-source visual archive for researchers and future generations. As habitat pressures increase, documentation becomes conservation. This project transforms field research into accessible global knowledge, ensuring that even the smallest desert species is seen, studied, and protected. Despite harsh climatic conditions, it supports diverse endemic fauna adapted to extreme environments. This study documents field observations of the Indian Desert Jird (Meriones hurrianae), a rodent species specialized for arid grassland and sandy scrub habitats. Through systematic visual documentation and behavioral recording during the Wiki Commons of the Wild Expedition - India 2026, we observed colony structure, feeding behavior, burrow dynamics, and mating activity. The findings highlight the species’ ecological role as a keystone grassland engineer and emphasize the importance of open-access conservation documentation in arid landscapes. Introduction: The Thar Desert is often characterized by sand dunes and aridity; however, it is a mosaic of grasslands, scrublands, and semi-arid habitats supporting unique biodiversity. Among its lesser-known mammals is the Indian Desert Jird (Meriones hurrianae), a small murid rodent endemic to the Indian subcontinent’s arid zones. Although previously recorded in early zoological surveys of the 20th century, contemporary behavioral documentation remains limited, particularly in open-access repositories. This study aims to contribute observational field data and visual records to strengthen awareness and conservation knowledge. Study Area: Field observations were conducted in semi-arid scrub and grassland habitats within the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan, India. The terrain consisted of sandy soils interspersed with sewan grass (Lasiurus sindicus) and xerophytic vegetation. The region experiences extreme temperature fluctuations and seasonal rainfall variability.
